Citizenship photo size
- 1200 × 1600 px preferred, JPEG.
- 70 KB to 3.5 MB.
Rules for the photo
- A neutral or light grey background.
- No more than 6 months old.
- Unedited. EditSpec only crops, resizes and compresses. It never changes your face or background, so the photo stays as it was taken.
Australian Passport renewals online use a photo code from a photo provider, so you can’t upload your own photo for those.
Rules checked in October 2026 from the Department of Home Affairs citizenship photo rules (opens in a new tab). They can change with each new notice, so check the current one before you apply.
By country: Canada Passport, Canada PR & Citizenship, Saudi eVisa, Singapore ICA, UK Passport, UK Visa & ETA, US 2 × 2 Inch, US Passport Renewal and US DV Lottery.
How it works
- Choose or drop a photo facing the camera.
- Pick your country, then the photo you need, such as a printed passport photo or an online application photo.
- Zoom and drag so your face is centred, check the size, then download the JPG.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this for an Australian Passport?
No. Online passport renewals take the photo from a provider’s photo code, not an upload.
What background does a passport photo need?
Most countries ask for plain white or light grey. Check the rules for your country: some, such as Canada and the UK, don’t accept edited photos.
My application has a file size limit. What do I do?
Set it under File size. Online application cards already have the official limit, and the tool keeps the file inside it.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. It works in modern mobile browsers, and iPhone HEIC photos open directly.
