Canadian Passport photo size
- 1200 × 1800 px up to 3000 × 4500 px, portrait (3:2).
- 200 KB to 5 MB, JPG.
- Chin to crown is 45–50% of the photo’s height.
Rules for the photo
- A plain white or light-coloured background.
- No filters, editing or AI tools. EditSpec only crops, resizes and compresses. It never changes your face or background, so the photo stays as it was taken.
Canada asks for the photo as it was taken. If your application asks for the original camera file, upload that instead.
Rules checked in October 2026 from the Government of Canada passport photo rules (opens in a new tab). They can change with each new notice, so check the current one before you apply.
By country: Australia Citizenship, Canada PR & Citizenship, Saudi eVisa, Singapore ICA, UK Passport, UK Visa & ETA, US 2 × 2 Inch, US Passport Renewal and US DV Lottery.
How it works
- Choose or drop a photo facing the camera.
- Pick your country, then the photo you need, such as a printed passport photo or an online application photo.
- Zoom and drag so your face is centred, check the size, then download the JPG.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why must the file be at least 200 KB?
Canada sets a minimum so the photo has enough detail. This page keeps the file between 200 KB and 5 MB.
What background does a passport photo need?
Most countries ask for plain white or light grey. Check the rules for your country: some, such as Canada and the UK, don’t accept edited photos.
My application has a file size limit. What do I do?
Set it under File size. Online application cards already have the official limit, and the tool keeps the file inside it.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. It works in modern mobile browsers, and iPhone HEIC photos open directly.
