UK Passport photo size
- At least 600 × 750 px. This page uses 1200 × 1500 px for a sharper photo.
- 50 KB to 10 MB, in colour.
Rules for the photo
- Your head, shoulders and upper body in the photo.
- A plain, light-coloured background with clear contrast.
- Plain expression, mouth closed, no shadows or red-eye.
- Glasses only if you need them for medical reasons. Taken within the last month.
- Unaltered. EditSpec only crops, resizes and compresses. It never changes your face or background, so the photo stays as it was taken.
Rules checked in October 2026 from the GOV.UK passport photo rules (opens in a new tab). They can change with each new notice, so check the current one before you apply.
By country: Australia Citizenship, Canada Passport, Canada PR & Citizenship, Saudi eVisa, Singapore ICA, UK Visa & ETA, US 2 × 2 Inch, US Passport Renewal and US DV Lottery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take my UK Passport photo at home?
Yes. Ask someone else to take it, against a plain light wall, then size it here.
What background does a passport photo need?
Most countries ask for plain white or light grey. Check the rules for your country: some, such as Canada and the UK, don’t accept edited photos.
My application has a file size limit. What do I do?
Set it under File size. Online application cards already have the official limit, and the tool keeps the file inside it.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. It works in modern mobile browsers, and iPhone HEIC photos open directly.
