Rules for the OCI Photo

This differs from the Indian passport photo, which needs a white background. For a passport, use Indian Passport Photo.

Requirements change often, and this page may not show the latest update. Always check the current instructions from the authority or exam body before you submit.

By Country: Australia Citizenship, Australia Passport, Canada Passport, Canada PR & Citizenship, Europe Schengen Visa, India OCI Services, India Passport, Saudi eVisa, Singapore ICA, UK Passport, UK Visa & ETA, US 2 × 2 Inch, US DV Lottery and US Passport Renewal.

How It Works

  1. Choose or drop a photo facing the camera.
  2. Pick your country, then the photo you need, such as a printed passport photo or an online application photo.
  3. Zoom and drag so your face is centred, check the size, then download the JPG.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my passport photo for the OCI card?

Usually not. The OCI photo needs a light background that isn’t white, while the Indian passport photo needs a white one.

Why does my OCI photo get rejected?

The most common reasons are a white background, a photo that isn’t square, or a file over 200 KB. This page sets the square size and the 200 KB limit for you.

What background does a passport photo need?

Most countries ask for plain white or light grey. Check the rules for your country: some, such as Canada and the UK, don’t accept edited photos.

My application has a file size limit. What do I do?

Set it under File Size. Online application cards already have the file size limit, and the tool keeps the file inside it.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. It works in modern mobile browsers, and iPhone HEIC photos open directly.
